Welcome to Calradia

A week after I started playing Mount & Blade: Warband, and I am thoroughly hooked on it. I have already played three different accounts, two of which have already made it to level 18. At this point I will be sticking solely to one account for a while. But let’s start off with introducing the game.

For Thursday, Jan 20

Well, the website, it still comes together. In the meantime, I'm posting yet another blog update with reading assignments.

Please prepare for Thursday by
1) reading the Introduction, Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 of Understanding Video Games
2) playing once One Chance

After playing this game, consider some questions:

- How does this game make an argument for its own artisticness?
- How does this game use elements unique to gameplay to express its aesthetic or rhetorical value?
- Why is this game so depressing?

It’s easy now…

Now that I have a map, I’ve been able to go through temples 2, 3, and 4 without much of a problem. The temples are very short, but they are full of enemies. Once you get into the temples, they are very intuitive. Just get rid of all the enemies in a room, and a key will appear. Or a door will open. Of course, the lack of refill hearts makes it easy to get a game over when you’re dealing with sporadic keese. So it does take a decent amount of time to get through a temple, but the overall difficulty level is low. The bosses are also ridiculously easy.

An Introduction to Fantasy

I’m not much of a gamer, but I have inherited some consoles (though not many genes) from my brother. We have all the Nintendo consoles, except N64, so I wanted to get the vintage feel and brought the Nintendo Entertainment System from 1985 to school with me. For my choice of videogame, I decided on Final Fantasy, the original version for the NES. I chose this game because I have never played it before, and there are multiple games that have come out for this series and I was interested in the storyline and plot.

Moving on…

Okay, so after a good hour of searching today, I finally gave up. I went online to find a map of the forest. Apparently, the place I was trying to get to was actually the final boss. Temple number two was pretty close to the beginning, as I had originally suspected, I had just overlooked the screen in which it was located. At least I can finally move on now!!

The Call of Duty.

I began playing my game, Super Mario Bros. 3, on a NES earlier this week. It has definitely been a learning experience to say the least. Having never played an NES before, I had no idea how to even begin to use it. My friend and I had to try to connect it to three different TVs in our building before getting a connection, but finally we had luck with the TV in our lobby. When I got the game started, the question arose whether or not a game could be saved on my chosen game.

Starting the Game

As soon as I pop in the game, the PS3 prompts me to update my system, unsurprised, I follow the instructions and wait for the game to load. As soon as it is done, the game auto starts. The game starts with a pirate like story about lost and buried treasure. The narrator (unknown at [...]

Beginning my Quest

My assignment during the course of this semester is to play a video game and blog about it (at least 300 words a week). The blogs (or glogs, as it is termed) should be thoughtful and reflect deeper reflection on the nature of the video game. The first part of this project, of course, is [...]

The Road to Redemption Begins

As the title states, I began playing God of War today. As I started the game up, I realized that all my saved data was still on my memory cards. I decided to use this to my advantage and to try and play the game in “God” mode which is the toughest difficulty for this game and is only available to be played if the game has been beaten on hard, and thanks to the saved data, it had been.
